significant place in the history of the City of New York. He was not just hitting upon the high offices which he had held, but hitting upon the true inward and spiritual service which he had rendered to people for many years. It was said just right and with real feeling and real emotion. I can't remember what he said, except that it was another of those striking and poignant expressions of the feelings of the people present, of those who felt most keenly and most nobly about this.

So, I really don't remember hearing about LaGuardia before he was Congressman, except perhaps in the most superficial way. He had been in the First World War. Because he spoke Italian so well he did come out of that war with a military title and some kind of a command. I don't remember the character of it, but he apparently had done very well indeed. He had had a military decoration and had done exceptionally well as a military man.

I don't think I had any direct contact with him until he was in Congress. He made a very good Congressman. There was some surprise in New York that he should have made a good Congressman. I never became aware of him as an eccentric character until after he was mayor because I didn't know enough about him. After he was mayor of course he did show certain eccentricities of behavior. He would say anything
