the end of the first year they were anxious to spread it to some other schools. She wanted it established in this school in Walker's district. I remember only vaguely her description of her approaches to Jimmy Walker on the matter to get his interest, because, she said, “They'll do anything for that school if Jimmy Walker wants it.” She had a very hard time in getting him interested in it. He just wasn't interested. He didn't care. She thought he was a very cold, hard boiled person. She had very unpleasant things to say about him.

She said that after all his father had been a contractor and he had profited enormously and grown very rich on public contracts - building schoolhouses and other public buildings, doing sewer, road and street contracting; they had a duty to the city and she thought Walker ought to personally put up the money for a school lunch project.

I remember that he never did and wasn't interested. I spoke to Al Smith about it and asked if he wouldn't please speak to Walker. He said, “Oh well, Jimmy isn't interested in that. There's no sense in it. I suppose Martha Draper's a good woman ....”

I said, “Yes indeed.”

“....but she's just the kind of woman to make Jimmy Walker's flesh creep.”
