on it, saying, “I believe the proposal is very good. I think it will be impossible to do it this way and this way. I suggest that instead of the committee appointed, you appoint somebody else.” She would give it her blessing and let it go.
She had that way of doing things. So she was not flattering and persuasive in the way in which politicians are accustomed to being approached. I think Al Smith regarded her as tolerable because he thought she had her number. She was a good woman who meant well, but had disagreeable ways about her. He felt that she wouldn't be at all the kind that Jimmy Walker could get on with. Hence, it was useless for Smith to take it up with Walker as he wasn't interested in that kind of thing. Smith said, “He doesn't care how the children get on. He thinks they get along good enough as it is. He'll give them a good time, but he's not going to be interested in that. You can't talk to him about too-berculosis and things like that.”
Walker was out for a good time and would give the children a big party, but nothing else. When he was in the Assembly, his May day parties were the best that were given. They'd start out from his area, go up to Central Park, had lots of presents and were the best parties given anywhere. He had money enough to do it and enjoyed giving them a good May party and lots of fun. But he didn't see the point of a
