head and he would make the transition. The Queen of the Belgians happened to be a very sophisticated and experienced woman. She was not in the least offended by this remark and I suppose put it down as one of the oddities that she'd observed in this country.

When Queen Marie of Rumania came to make her visit of thanksgiving, Grover Whalen came into his own. She was a very spectacular person naturally. She moved in a very dramatic and spectacular aura all the time, had all of her life. When she arrived, everything was spectacular in her arrival, in her clothing, in everything that she did, in her appearance - a very handsome woman. Grover Whalen was a perfect match for her. He also was handsome and spectacular and he loved it. He just rose into his glory. He arranged all the proper things for her, as he had for the King and Queen of the Belgians.

There were a good many others who came, not only crowned heads, but distinguished military and air men, officers of governments who came to pay their respects. They landed in New York. That's how the mayor of New York had to cope with them. Then they proceeded at once to Washington where they called upon the President. Then frequently they made a tour all over the country, like Queen Marie did. I
