address in such a way that he brought out all the pertinent points. To be sure, we helped him because we digested our own material for him, but at least he read, he mastered it and he could discuss it. He was very fully aware of what it was.
It was the same thing that he did with this Walker thing. He really mastered it. That was, of course, the occasion when Walter Lippmann said the unbelievable had happened, that a Governor in office had proven himself a master of the art of cross-examination and of the bringing forth of the truth without injustice, bringing forth the truth by the most highly developed art of cross-examination without bluffing and without bullying. That was true. I don't think he bullied Walker at any point. At the most critical moments, when his questions were really critical, he lowered his voice. Whether that was a courtroom trick or not, I don't know, because I never heard him try a case in court. But it's not what most trial lawyers do, or most cross-examining lawyers do. It was almost as though he was embarrassed and hated to ask the question. He sort of lowered his voice to make it less offending.
There wasn't a trace of retributative justice there. That was one of the things that was quite remarkable as you sat there on the sidelines and heard it. There was no
