depending much on whether I was in Boston or Chicago. I didn't change my speeches much locally, though I do now. At that time I thought the people of the United States were all just the same - imagine! With regard to my little pieces, they were the same. I mean they responded just about the same everywhere. This was all I knew. I knew I couldn't compete with the good spread-eagle speeches. I wasn't in that class at all. But this was what I could offer and so I offered that. It was good. I could make it longer or shorter. I could use examples if they wanted me to speak an hour, or if the next speaker didn't come I could speak on.

I made another speech in Boston. I had made a principal speech somewhere else on this particular occasion. I was asked to turn up at ten o'clock in the evening at a general meeting which was to be held in some local section ward of the city. I was told that former Mayor John F. Fitzgerald, (“Honey Fitz”) was going to speak. Then the candidate for Governor was coming. It was very important to have a good speaker. There would be a big crowd gathered to hear the candidate for Governor. These were the rank and file. I was told that these were the people who would get out the vote, these were the run-of-the-mill Democrats. It was very important to keep them interested and keep them working in the government. The Governor was speaking earlier, so
