He also, of course, has a deep well of affection and loyalty to those to whom he has sworn fealty. Roosevelt was one of them. So there was a deep loyalty there and I could see why Roosevelt referred to him as “dear old Dan,” but I wouldn't have recommended him to Roosevelt as the Secretary of Labor, although Tobin wanted it and the AF of L was hinting it at every point.

I don't know whether Ruth Bryan Owen was thought of. I don't think so. I don't know why she should have been, except that her father was well-disposed to labor when he was a candidate for the Presidency. I have heard since that time, and I don't know from whom I have heard it, that she was considered for the post and that somebody had suggested her. It was not Miss Dewson or the Woman's Division of the Democratic party. That I know, because they had only one candidate and didn't have any second string.

Certainly Ruth Owen had done some very major speech making work during the campaign and had been very useful. I think she was a member of Congress at the time. She had been very helpful and cooperative in every way. I heard a good while later that she had been considered by somebody and had been recommended. Her name was among names that were being considered by Roosevelt. How seriously it was considered, I do not know. I haven't
