tall and probably awkward. Everybody felt sorry for her. Her grandmother felt sorry for her. Her aunts felt sorry for her. She was a sweet child and they said, “poor little Eleanor. Certainly ‘poor little Eleanor' must come to spend Christmas with us.”
Eleanor met Nan Honeyman at Mrs. Douglas Robinson's. Nan Honeyman was asked for her great charm, gaiety, style, and so forth. Her father had met the Douglas Robinsons somewhere in the West. Her father was a most picturesque figure from the West Coast. Nan Honeyman had come East to go to school and Mrs. Robinson had asked her to spend Christmas. Mrs. Honeyman told me herself that she had never met Eleanor at this time, but she had been asked to spend Christmas with the Robinsons as a charming, vigorous, bright, gay young girl who would add pleasure to the family gathering. Mrs. Robinson said to her, “Now ‘poor little Eleanor' is coming. I want you to be very nice to her. She's an orphan and my niece. We all try to make Eleanor come for Christmas and have a good time.”
Nan tried to make her have a good time. The result was that these two girls took a frightful shine to each other, became fast friends and have been friends ever since. At that time the advantage was all on Nan Honeyman's side. She was the gay, attractive person and Eleanor wasn't.
