magazine that you could pick up - weekly or monthly - as well as many special newspaper articles, was full of articles by Technocrats, or about Technocracy. It had great standing. I hate to say sober standing, but it had large standing. I don't think that its popularity was a very sober popularity. I think it was an engaging idea that came to people who were in despair, because they couldn't think of anything to do about this terrible period we were in when employment was less every week, wages were less every week, production was less every week, profits had almost disappeared, banks were running out of money to pay the demands of their depositors and everybody was in a kind of terror as we sank. This had been going on for two years.
Of course, that sinking not only gave the Technocrats a chance to air their views, but the Technocrats' plans and ideas caught on in terms of social planning, caught on in terms of a planned economy. Those words had begun to appear in '33, '32, '31, with the result that everybody, every Tom, Dick and Harry in the United States out of work, with not much to do, whether he was in a business or a profession, who was well-educated, but had no job, or if he held a job there was nothing to do on it because there was no business coming in, had plenty of time to think.
