I looked at him in some surprise. I remember saying, “Well, because the American people are still a pioneer people at heart. The people who are not the early pioneers who broke the plain are still recent immigrants or have the memory of recent immigration. They came out with nothing to nothing. They are still a make-do, improvising, substituting, ‘turn over a penny,' ‘take in each other's washing' type of people. In addition, although there is this terrific number of people unemployed” - I think we were then calling it 15,000,000 people unemployed - “there are still a lot of people employed. There are still a lot of people working and living on farms. There are a lot of people laid off in Detroit in that practically totally shut down city. Have you been there?”
He said, “Yes, and I see the figures. Except in some relatively minor areas, there is no outward sign of suffering and certainly no sign at all of revolutionary feeling. There are no meetings.”
I said, “Many of those people who have been laid off have gone home.”
He said, “What do you mean ‘home?'”
I said, “They've gone home to the farm that father or grandfather still owns, or that the brother still owns. We are a farming people. Our huge labor force has been
