which you will, other women will be asked. It wouldn't be strange anymore. You've been the first woman in a great many places.”

That was true. I had been the first woman in the New York State government. I had been the first woman on the board of this and the board of that. So I knew it could be done and that after I'd done it, other women were asked to do things. I had that sense of obligation. I had more sense of obligation to do it for the sake of other women than I did for almost any other one thing. It might be that the door would close on them and that weaker women wouldn't have the chance.

Anyhow, I told my husband all of this. He was very nice about it. He was happy that I had been asked. He was having a good day. Of course, he'd been partly prepared for this, because he had been reading the papers too. Anyhow, he agreed.

Then I went home. It was then that I suddenly collapsed like a fool. I realized all of a sudden what I had let myself in for. I realized that my home was a happy home, my husband was getting better at the time. He was on the upgrade and the likelihood was that he would be able to be released in a short time - not short, but eight or ten months. We had a home. He had a place to come to. My child was at a very attractive period of her life and also very appealing. She
