on this and that my name would be sent to the Senate. Friends began to call up, come in and send flowers. Eostatic telegrams, letters, and so forth came from people everywhere. All the old Consumers' League people repeated what Mrs. Kelley had said to me in the restaurant of the Pennsylvania Station when I told her that Al Smith had asked me to go on the Industrial Board. Tears ran down her cheeks and she said, “God's holy name be praised. I never expected to live to see this.” People began saying versions of that. This was the group of people who knew me and who had been associated with me in these so-called good works, by which we had obtained labor and social legislation in the State of New York, and who believed that I could go forward. All these old engineers and architects, who had been associated with me in the Committee on Safety and who had been present at the wonderful luncheon that they gave me when I was first appointed Industrial Commissioner called me up.
