He said to me afterwards, “You know, I went up to spend Saturday night. I got up in time for dinner. We had a very nice time. We had a nice talk at dinner. Mrs. Roosevelt's an awfully nice woman. I certainly like to talk with her. We had a nice talk. Somebody came in after dinner. It was very nice and I was glad to see them. Still we didn't get to talking. I thought we'd get some talking done the next day. I got up and went to Mass early. He didn't get up until noon. Then it was time for lunch. Some more people came in. You know, I only had an hour with him all the time I was there. I had to take the six o'clock train back to New York. I only had an hour with him and he didn't want to seem to settle down and talk about anything important. We talked about a lot of things, but anybody could tell him about this - who was who in the Legislature. There's no great problem to that.”
Al was a little disturbed. He didn't realize he was getting the brush-off. He tended to think it was a kind of inadequacy of Roosevelt's to come to grips with anything. He told me this not at the time, but sometime afterwards. Then, whenever he would press the point about Mrs. Moskowitz who would be such a fine go-between for them, the Governor would turn it off and would say, “I don't think so. I think it's better to let it go along this way.” He knew that was the
