that she knew and had and would have worked very faithfully for him. She thought it was a great mistake and it showed - and she used this phrase for the first time - “how short-sighted a man your Governor is.” She said “your” Governor. I remember that so plainly. That was a mark in my mind that indicated a change of climate. That was some time in the spring. I don't think the Legislature had adjourned yet, but it was probably in March.

She then began to work for Al Smith more totally. I forget what kind of an occupation they fixed up, but they fixed up something. I've forgotten what they were doing at that time, but anyhow there was money enough so that Smith was having a salary for something and so was she. I think Smith took the trip to Europe that summer. By the time he came back the rift was no better. It was really settled and Roosevelt had accepted the separation with a kind of relief. I hate to say that, but I think it was a kind of relief. Whatever had been done had been done by this time and it was clear that Mrs. Moskowitz was not going to be used in any capacity whatever. That had been made clear to her some time in the early spring.

From that time on, I'm very sure from what I saw and know, she began to needle Smith. She began to point out to Smith every episode, every situation, which wasn't exactly
