because the water came form croton Reservoir. Every well brought up housekeeper who knows anything, or learns anything, learns to keep ahead of them. You don't leave anything to guesswork. You never leave a crumb of food anywhere. It's always locked up tight in tight boxes. You clean up under the sinks and under the stoves, in back of the sinks and in back of the stoves. You have the kitchen table drawers taken out and cleaned and disinfectant put in. You change the papers, in the cupboard shelves every week, You wash with strong ammonia back in there. You have the exterminator in every month whether you have seen a cockroach or not. He leaves poison around. Then there is a famous anti-roach material called JO Roach Paste, which is a white phosphorescent salve that comes in a red can. You put this on pieces of potato and leave it around in the kitchen, or bathroom, or washroom, or laundry, or wherever you think Croton Bugs or cockroaches may appear, or where you have seen them, you leave that out for three or four successive nights. You take great care to throw it away early in the morning before children or dogs or cats or careless maids get at it. You take great care to throw it away early in the morning before children or dogs or cats or careless maids get at it. The phosphorus glows.
