This was explained to me and I was invited to come. I said that I would naturally want to come very much indeed. It was very fortunate because that would be my opportunity to meet all of the employees of the Department. I supposed they all came. He said, “well, not all of them come, but most of them come. All the old - timers come back.”

I said, “Now, Mr. Gompers, this would be the time to introduce to me by name everybody in the Department. It's a wonderful opportunity. We'll stand in a reception line. Mr. White will stand next to me. There will be a few other people, but you stand between me, and the door and you know the people and you introduce everybody to me.”

He came back about an hour later and said, “Well, I don't think that would be so good. I don't know that I would know the names of all of the people that would come.”

I said, “But you probably know more than anybody else.”

He said, “Well, of course, there's the payroll clerk. The payroll clerk must know everybody's name.”

I said, “All right, do that.”

After Gompers invited me, I said to Mr. White, “You will go, of course.”

He said, “I hadn't thought of going.”
