I had not checked those with the President, but I did later, within a few days.

I saw at once that I had to do something about the Conciliation Bureau, but I thought that could wait, because there were no strikes going on. There was no terrible excitement and that could kind of rock along.

The Children's Bureau and the Women's Bureau I had long before made up my mind to let strictly alone. They were competent, effective. Although the Women's Bureau needed a good deal of improvement, it at least was solid as far as it went and it was firm in the hearts of the countrymen. The women of the country supported it and the bureau did good work. The Women's Bureau was headed by Mary Anderson. Grace Abbott was the head of the Children's Bureau. I told Grace Abbott almost within moments of my arrival that I fully expected her to stay on, and so did the President. She needn't bother even to present her resignation, which she said she had already done. I told her that it would be thrown right back at her. That was perfectly clear and I had talked with Roosevelt about that.

I must have seen Roosevelt before I went back to New York over the weekend. I'm pretty sure I did, because I only went up on Sunday and came right back. I just got a couple of suitcases, arranged my family affairs in New
