“Somebody.” She had been really the key person in the woman's division for the organization of the work in that part of the country. Miss Dewson thought very highly of her. She only had two or three people she wanted to reward and those were the two or three. One of them was in my Department and one of them was in allied things. So I heard from her all right and I found no objections to the people that she recommended.

I don't recall Jim Farley recommending anybody to me, except Eddie McGrady as Assistant Secretary and he had been recommended to me some time before we came down here I had no objection to McGrady. If the politicians wanted him, that was all right with me. I named him to replace White, but I didn't name him right away. This I had to explain to Jim and I had to take it up with Jim. After I decided that I wanted White to stay, I knew that what White was able to do for me McGrady would never be able to do for me. Even if he had been the most capable of men, he wouldn't have know how to catch onto some of these intricate internal problems which White was well accustomed to. White was very well-disposed to helping to do this reorganization, particularly on the Immigration Service. I explained this to Jim. When I told him about this Section 24 thing, he said, “All right, but do it as quick as you can.”
