if they would, what they regarded as a good and practical program for the Bureau of Labor Statistics - that is, corrections in its present methods and policies, additions to its list of subjects which they canvassed and investigated.
He thought that was fine. I said, “We'll have the list and we'll then decide who to appoint. I think it would be wonderful if we say, ‘This is not a political appointment. This appointment, although made by the President, is selected from a group of technical people recommended by their own, technical, professional association and not by any politician.’” Of course, I said to him privately, “I'll see to it that no black Republican gets it, but I'll determine that privately.” That was said in fun, but I really meant it. I wouldn't have brought in a man who was totally opposed to us and our ideas.
They recommended a list. A great many people who are now in the government were on that list, al though they were not then in the government. Ewan Clague, who is now the Bureau of Labor Statistics man, was on that list. I don't remember the others, but I've known them all ever since. They were extremely good men. Among others was Isador Lubin, who was over here at the Brookings Institute. I had heard of Lubin from a number of other people. Of course, I had had plenty of recommendations made to me for the Bureau of
