He said, “That sounds fine, but you give it a thought, and let me give it a thought.”
It was a quick decision. He was the most talented person for this kind of a job. There was a little negotiating back and forth. I had to clear it with the President, and so forth. Somebody who hadn't liked what he'd done about opium complained. There was an opium crowd in this country. They were anti-opium but very unrealistic. He, as the representative of Persia, had insisted upon the right of Persia to raise opium and send some of it into the opium market, the legal market, to be sure. There is a real legal market for opium. It's used medicinally. All the sedatives are derived from it. You couldn't have an operation without morphine. In time of war the first and most essential of supplies is opium. When a man's wounded, what do you do? You give him a shot. That's opium. That's all that will kill pain. Even codine is a derivative of opium, which they give you when your tooth aches so badly. It's a derivative and greatly reduced in strength.
