vehicle can go. So to this day I think they have a few donkeys and a few horses, which are kept at strategic positions so that they can get a horse to go up into the mountains if they need it.
He did a very interesting thing in the way that he instructed them. This I was enthusiastic about when I went down for the inauguration of it. He said, “These men roam around the country a great deal. They are roaming around hunting for illegal entry immigrants who are perhaps hidden away in these villages, but they are the only officer of the United States government that the people in some of these remote places ever see or have any contact with, except possibly the Rural Free Delivery man. Here are these strong, armed, able-bodied men, equipped with a good automobile. They should be available for aid and help to the community.”
So we issued orders that if anybody was sick in any community they went to, they were to offer to transport them to the hospital. We outfitted them with a really good first aid kit and with some instructions as to what to do, so that where they met illness or accident, they could take care of it. There were no doctors in lots of these communities. There wasn't a two-way radio then, but there was a strange kind of an army telephone system that MacCormack knew about.
