but we must have others. We must have those who are well disposed to Roosevelt there too.” So we doped out George Berry of the Pressmen's Union, and Dan Tobin, of course, of the Teamsters. They were both Democrats Tobin had been the chairman of the Roosevelt campaign committee's labor committee. George Berry of the Pressmen's Union had been a member of the committee. There were two or three others.

Lubin wasn't in the Department at this time, but I was consulting him about some things and he was helping me on this. So he, Clara Beyer and her husband all knew leaders of national unions who were, they thought, influential, should be recognized, had large memberships, and so on. Dan Tracy of the Electrical Workers was among them, I had never met him then. Martin Durkin of the Plumbers came on for it. There were quite a few like that.

Clara Beyer suggested John Lewis of the Miners. I said, “Yes, that's good, Isn't he a Republican?”

“Yes, he's a Republican, and always was, but he had some kind of a falling out with Hoover, I think he's just ripe to come and help us. What's more, he's a very powerful man. Although he's under a cloud at the present time - he used to have a big union, though it has shrunk - he's still a man to be reckoned with.”

I said, “Isn't it true that the other AF of L people don't like him?”
