remember who we chose. I put Dan Tobin as chairman of the committee. He was the only person who was really hurt, sore and difficult when I was appointed. Yet he was a good Christian man and kept trying to do the right thing by me. He had supposed he was going to be Secretary of Labor. He was the one whom Green and the AF of L had recommended. He Sort of thought he would be Secretary. He had been an original “Roosevelt for President Before Chicago” man. He'd been chairman of the labor sub-committee of the campaign committee. He thought he would be all right for Secretary of Labor. It was very hard for him to accept me, although we became very good friends, and I really think that Dan Tobin and I were as good friends as I was with anybody in the labor movement.

He's a very blustery, explosive type of person He's not a calm person at all - very explosive and blustery. He was red-faced and very uncomfortable at this conference. Just as we were about to adjourn at noon for lunch he got up. He was all hot, bothered, flustered and mad. He said, “Madam Secretary, this is no kind of a place to hold a conference. This is terrible. This is a dreadful room. We can't do anything here. I move we adjourn and meet in the AF of L building right after lunch.”

I knew I had to stop that. They would all rather have
