“I suppose, Madam Secretary, that that will be a way of preventing revolution, won't it?” Well now, what if you say, “Yes.” That means “PERKINS EXPECTS REVOLUTION” will be the headline.

Every question followed a pattern of stereotypes. Employers were bloated bondholders. OF course, they aren't bloated. They're just like other people, but that was the employer. They would ask a question that would say, “Well, I suppose hard - hearted employers have done this.” Well, if you say, “Yes,” then the story is, “Miss Perkins said that hard-hearted employers do this.” You never used the word at all, and you wouldn't use it. It isn't in your style of thought, but they asked the question and you said, “Yes.” What you meant was that employers, in some instances, have done this. Some employers in some instances have employed under-age children, for instance.

At first I got into lots of trouble by just answering a question like that as though they were intelligent men and weren't going to quote me as using their words But this is a device of the newspaper man today - using the words in a question, getting a person to say yes or no to it, and then putting those words into his mouth. That gives him a very irresponsible sound in the community at times. How should you answer? Say, “You may quote me, but
