days of my taking office. As I've already said, I found the Department in terrible confusion and disorder, with actual dirt, filth, mess and cockroaches all about. Miss Jay, my secretary in New York, was not able to come down to join me until she had cleaned up some work we had left in New York, because I had left rather suddenly and unexpectedly. I had expected to be back in New York for at least two weeks before I came to Washington. She had to clean up the work that I had left, clean up my papers, extract my papers from those of the Department of Labor in New York. So I didn't have her in Washington.
I made do with the secretary who had been Doak's secretary. Also, there were two men in the anteroom of my office as assistants to the Secretary, who had been Republican political figures. There was a funny old colored butler who was the receptionist in the outer office and three women who were clerks or typists. I thoughts that these people would all be decent and nice and that I could move along for a few weeks with them until I got my bearings and got my own people selected. I've already discussed my interviews with Mr. Robe Carl White, how good he was, how long he stayed and how useful he was.
But during this period before Miss Jay came down and before anybody belonging to me came, any number of people
