I thought about it, but I saw no signs of disaster. As I want around the country, I saw people seeming more cheerful, to be sure. Things were very bad, but now you could go and get relief if it was too terrible. You didn't like it, but you could get it. You were helped a little. Fifteen dollars was better than nothing. Even a handout of grapefruit was better than nothing.

To this day I don't know where he got the magic date of June 15th. As a matter of fact, as the months wore on I remembered this 15th of June. It wasn't possible for me to get my family out of the city by the 15th of June, but I knew they would be getting out by the 30th of June anyhow. That was the time they'd set to go to Maine. I didn't think too much about it, but I watched the thing. The 15th of June came and passed. The 25th came. Nothing happened.

Towards the end of June I met him again in the corridor one day. I said a few words. I said, “Well, the 15th of June came and passed, and fortunately nothing happened very bad. I think things are a little better every week, don't you?”

“No, I see no basic improvement, no basic improvement. The 15th of June was apparently not the correct date. I have now projected another date. It is the 15th of August.
