or whatever else he had for them to do. Sure, he was for it. Sure, it was possible. Henry Morgenthau was sold to it. Bruce was there and he was put in charge of the project.
The visible results of the artists, project in this relief are perhaps more remembered by the people of the United States, and are certainly more obvious, if they go around in public buildings at all, than almost anything else. All these buildings that were then in the process of construction then on Constitution Avenue were among the first buildings that were chosen to be decorated. Bruce, being a good artist, a really good artist, knew that you shouldn't put just trash on the walls because the man was hungry, but that you should have competition between the hungry for the opportunity. They would all get $15.00 a week for painting whatever they painted, but you should have a competition between them for the selection of the painter to paint the decorations on the Department of Justice, the Post Office Department, and other places. So the thing started. It was very interesting and went all over the country.
By '35 or '36 there was a great show in Washington of the best, the selected canvases, of all the art projects done on this relief work. By that time the project was called WPA. The showing was really very impressive. It was really extremely interesting. Some of the pictures were awfully
