The best pictures that were in that WPA show are now in the Department of Labor. They hang on that lower corridor. The corridor has been rifled over and over again by officials, or even employees of the Department, who want some pictures for their office. They go down in the corridor and pick out the one they want. There are thus some lovely pictures in the offices in the Department of Labor that are selected from the reserve stock of WPA paintings.
The White House also wanted some. Of course, by courtesy, the White House was allowed to have the first choice. Ned Bruce insisted on that. So the White House made their first choice. They chose some pictures that hung in the President's outer office, in McIntyre's office and in Early's office for some time. They were not, to my way of thinking, the best paintings in the show. At least one of them was very poor. It was chosen because it was like the Thomas Brown paintings of the bootblacks. This was an unemployed boy.
However, no one can keep these paintings. I would love to buy the one I have, but it belongs to the government. So when I leave office, I'll have to surrender. You can't buy anything that belongs to the government. I can't buy an ashtray. The government can dispose of them at public auction and does, but you can't buy it. If somebody buys 100,000 chairs, you can't buy one chair.
