uncomfortable and unpleasant assignment out of a sense of mission of some sort.

He had at that time in his own mind this conception that the university would be for the benefit of the Arabs, Lebanese and all the people. There was no reason why the American College at Beirut and Roberts College at Constantinople should be the only colleges in the Near East. There would be an education for them. There were the days when everybody thought that education would solve almost any problem. He certainly believed that.

I speak of this only to indicate that the best Jews didn't have to be interested in Palestine and weren't, and therefore couldn't look down on Baruch for that. I don't think he ever was interested. That wouldn't account for the Jewish feeling against him, if there is. He certainly never associated himself with any of the Jewish charities. He may have given to them, but he didn't give with any ostentation.

In '24 he clearly was working against Smith. He didn't think Smith was fit to be President. I remember Mrs. Summer Gerard said that to me. The Sumner Gerards were for Smith. Mrs. Sumner Gerard said to me, “Baruch doesn't think Smith is fit to be President. What's more, he doesn't think he can get the nomination. He doesn't see any reason for our blowing ourselves around here for
