Yet the code that they were about to sign had 7(a) in it, and the law under which they were operating had 7(a) in it. They didn't think all that applied to them. Their idea was that their workers didn't want to belong to a union. They were sure of that.
I said, “I know you have no unions and that you have a policy of not having any unions, but what difference does it make. Your employees know that they don't belong to unions and that you don't want them to.”
“Ah but,” said Myron Taylor, “you don't seem to understand. They will hear that we talked to William Green. That will be understood in the steel towns and in the steel communities that we have weakened and that perhaps they can get away with having a union, that perhaps we have weakened on this. It will be understood that we have sanctioned and recognized the existence of organized labor, and we don't.”
He knew that 7(a) was in the act, but he didn't think it would apply to him. They honestly believed that their employees did not wish to belong to unions. He was saying tacitly that if they weakened there were some foolhardy ones among their employees who might want to get in and they didn't want to have any trouble.
