air conditioning came into the Department of Commerce auditorium where the big hearings were held - and Robbie coming up every half hour with a glass of water for him to drink. Many people remember that. Many people thought it was just funny and comical and that she was just snowing herself off. It brought her into the public eye in a way she didn't need to be brought into the public eye - perhaps she wanted it and perhaps she didn't. However, it gave the impression that she was taking care of Johnson.
It was then a very short time before people began to realize that if you wanted to get anything done, you got to know Miss Robinson, you got on the good side of Miss Robinson. She was taking care of Hugh, but she needn't have come in herself with the water. She could have sent a page in, but coming up with the water herself brought her a prominence that brought her ill will. It would have been the better part of wisdom to send the water in by messenger. That's what a messenger is for - to carry in water, messages, and so on. That was one of the first things that began to start this gab, gab, gab about her.
Anyhow, very early in the game Mrs. Johnson, who had scarcely appeared before and had been somewhere down in Virginia, heard about Miss Robinson, and came to Washington. She didn't come with blood in her eye. She just came to see
