contribute money - liberally and without too much question. Mary was wonderful about that. She would give to things generously without having to have it proven to her that something was a success. I often thought how differently she gave than the Rockefeller Foundation. They would give you $50,000 if you could prove to them that these particular statistics would solve the problem, but Mary would give because the money was needed and the objectives of the settlement, or society, or group were good. She could see the reason for them.

But she had no administrative experience whatever. Being President of the Junior League is not a great administrative experience. Being chairman of committees to raise money, chairman of the mayor's committee on something or other, or the Governor's committee for good works, is not great administrative experience.

Anyhow, Johnson made up his mind to that. I thought it was a good idea, so we said, “Yes, she will.” Then we all proceeded to scurry around to get people to help her. I promised to help her. She got a pretty good committee together. She got a good economist and that was that.

Anyhow, this consumers' committee was formed before the 1st of July. I know that because on the 1st of July,
