Miss. Dickerman. Do you know Miss Dickerman?”
I said, “Yes.”
She said, “Well, did you see what kind of a dress she had on the other night at the dinner?”
I said, “Well, I saw it was a very handsome dress.”
She said, “Well, I know that Mrs. Rosenberg took her out to a very swell dressmaker. I don't remember the name but it was one of the great fashionable dressmakers of London and she had her buy that dress. I guess Miss Dickerman had never had such a handsome dress before,” which proved to be the case. Mrs. Rosenberg had said to Marion, “You've never had any fun. Come on, buy yourself a good dress. We'll go get you a fine dress.” She got Marion Dickerman all jazzed up, all dressed up in a smart dress. She took her to a hairdresser and had her hair all curled, waved, and jazzed up. She looked like a different person. I'd never seen Marion look the way she did the night of the dinner that the Board gave for them.
Mrs. Watt went on, “She's been taking her out dancing. She gets her a partner.” In other words, she gave Miss Dickerman a beautiful time. Miss Dickerman was probably born an old maid. I doubt when she was sixteen and eighteen she had anybody take her out to dances. Mrs. Rosenberg just got somebody to get a partner for her and they had a good time.
