to say that he was to have the final word on it and see the bill.”

That was it. I appealed to Pat Johnson. I even took Pat out in the hall and said, “Pat, do for heaven's sake interpose in this. Your father is wrecking himself and everybody else. The Senator will hit the ceiling, because the General did, so help me God, cussing my throat, say these words, ‘Richberg is my agent. Whatever he agrees to, I agree to and I will be bound by it.'”

Pat said to me, “I can't interfere. You know I can't interpose. That's Pa's business and I can't interfere with it. I never have and never will.”

So there we were. We stayed as long as the hospital would allow you to stay - half or three-quarters of an hour - and made no headway at all. The General was getting excited denoucing people. He knew we were talking about a bill that was going to make what he called the Wagner Committee - the little committee inside the NRA - a permanent body with teeth. He was still saying, however, “I won't agree to anything. We'll carry on in the NRA. We don't need this kind of thing.” I'm not sure, however, that he fully understood what was going on. He certainly never read the bill. We pushed it into his hands. I put on my glasses and
