I think they felt that they had accepted a great deal of hospitality from Mrs. Rumsey and me, had gone down to Mrs. Rumsey's nice place in Virginia to spend a Sunday two or three times. She had a lovely place in Middleburg. It's a short drive so we used to go down there and spend the day on Sundays. They'd been to dine with us several times and they had a feeling of wishing to extend hospitality. So they thought of a picnic on the boat, which was very delightful. It was a summer evening and it was lovely and cool. They invited Johnson and the Peeks. There may have been other people there. It was a very delightful party. I don't remember anything happening of any consequence. It was just a pleasant evening.
It was after that that we had this trouble with Johnson. It was probably therefore in June, July or August. I think I went to see him in the hospital another time after that. It was about some very trifling thing. The earlier time when I'd been to see him in the hospital was also very trifling. I had no impression then except that he was sick and was better, but this time he had been awful sick. That was quite clear, and he wasn't fully recovered then.
At any rate, the Senator and I rode away from the hospital and I remember the Senator saying, “What in the world did he send for us for? Why did we come out here?
