put there. I don't mean to say that he was cheated on it exactly. He had it in his hand long enough to have read it in the automobile coming over, but I know how prepared speeches can mislead you. I've had them handed to me, and, thank God, I'm a suspicious woman. I have never yet given a speech that had some of those catch phrases and funny ideas in it that I didn't catch them myself. I never have read a speech yet that I haven't read carefully in its final draft - at least reading it backstage before I went on.
I don't remember whether this rally was before or after Johnson ended up in Walter Reed. After all, he'd been in Walter Reed for a number of times. There were times he might even have been in as long as the one I've described. There were times that I didn't know where he was. He was just away. But the time I've described at Walter Reed was the time that the Senator and I went out there, and whether this rally was before or after that I cannot say. I really don't remember at all. My impression would be that the rally would have been before, but about that I don't know.
I know that my interview with Blacky Smith was after that visit to Walter Reed Hospital. Blacky described to me in great detail the agony that the people who worked with Johnson were in. He laid it on me that he thought it was
