McIntyre, didn't know what was going on in there, but he told me later that he knew there was pretty loud talk at one time. That's all he could say. He said, “You know, the loud talk doesn't come from the President. He never shouts.” But, of course, Johnson was capable of shouting.
I never have had a perfectly clear report as to what their talk was all about or what was said. A few days later the President told me his version of what was said between them, but that certainly wasn't what Johnson understood to have been said between them. At any rate, he was there a long time - an hour or an hour and a half, which was a long, long appointment. When he came out, he came out walking like a soldier, with his face sort of glowing and elated. I can't say all this for sure, because I didn't see him. I only had this as a second-hand report, but was told that he came out like a soldier, with his head in the air, looking straight ahead. The newspaper men all rushed around him, “Well, General Johnson, what did the President talk to you about? Are you going to leave the NRA? Are you going somewhere?”
He said, “The President told me to stay right here with my feet nailed to the floor. That's what I'm going to do.”
