onto the terrace, saying, “Oh do come quickly! Washington has been calling you all day long. Washington has called you five or six times. They say it's the President's office. You must call them. It's very, very important. You must call the minute you get here. You mustn't delay a minute.”

I sat down and said, “Oh, do let me get a glass of cold water first.”

“No, they say you must call immediately.”

Somebody brought me a glass of ginger ale. It had been a hot day and a hot drive. Harold Otis said, “Can you imagine what it's about?”

I said, “Yes, I can imagine, but I hope it's not about that.”

I said, “McIntyre, what does he want me for? I talked to him only yesterday and he said it was all right for me to go away for a week. What in the world does he want me for?”

“Haven't you seen the morning papers?” McIntyre said.
