“Yes, sir.”

“You understood what I said, Mr. Richberg?”

“Yes, sir.”

He was making sure there was no misunderstanding.

Johnson stood up and said, “Very well, Mr. President, I understand what you say. I'm a good soldier. I do what I'm asked to do by my Commander in Chief. That's all there is to it, unless you want some further conversation with these two.”

The President said, “That's all right. Nothing more, General.”

The General said good-bye and walked out. I started to go out and the President said, “Wait a minute, I want to speak to you.”

I went out into the Green Room to say to McIntyre, “For heaven's sake, go with Hugh and take him out the back way. Don't let him run into the press. He'd in a terrible, desperate, pitiful mood and I don't know what he'll say or do. He's bewildered. Stick with him.”

For once McIntyre accepted the idea. I don't think he went with him, but I think Early did. One of them hopped up and went with Hugh. They didn't at that time let the press into the main body of the white House so they took him down the stairs and out onto the South
