The President said, “That's astonishing. We got Hugh from Baruch. He lent him to us.”
I said, “Yes, that's what I said to him, but he said that Hugh couldn't work without supervision, somebody to lead him and keep him in order. I don't know what he means by that.”
The President said, “Have you seen anything wrong with Hugh?”
I said, “No, I've only known him these few weeks. I've seen nothing wrong with him. The man is touched with genius. He's excitable. He's slightly unstable at times. That I can see. But he is a driver and able.” He wasn't drinking so much then that there had been any rumor about it, or that I had seen it. I didn't realize that he drank heavily. He had drunk heavily before, but in the weeks that I had known him I had never seen him drinking too much and I hadn't heard anybody say that he drank too much and to watch out too much. Robbie (Miss Frances Robinson) had never been heard of at that time. Nobody knew her then, and he didn't know her. She was brought in to work later. His wife was peculiar, but she was all right. She was just a fussy army wife. There wasn't anything wrong with her. So far as anybody could tell his reputation was all right. His sideline had been that he wrote boys' stories as a secondary
