number of people from General Motors came down to see me by appointment. I had a dreadful time getting them to come and talk it over at all. They were just going to be absolutely adamant. They were not going to meet anybody. They were not going to cattle with anybody. The union organizers were just going to have to leave the plant. They weren't going to recognize any union. The strike situation was by no means general at that time. It had not spread to every part of General Motors. It was still confined to certain plants and certain locations, but it had been going on for enough weeks so that they were very disturbed about it. We were also very disturbed about it.
How did I get them to come here? I remember it took some wangling. At any rate, I had naturally some direct contacts with these employers in General Motors. My best contact was through Steve De Bruile, their economist, who was a very intelligent man, very nervous. He was their adviser on economics. He was a very well-informed and well-posted man and one could talk with him about questions of wages and hours and things of that sort without making him mad. You could even talk with him about union representation, although he believed, along with all the other General Motors people, that
