possible for men to have thought of doing it just on their own. It seemed natural to them at the moment and it did give them quite an edge on their employers. They got just the slightest advantage for the one time in their lives. Well, it was terrible the way it flared up in the newspapers. People made the most extreme statements.
On the other hand, I had everybody who was able to search searching the laws, searching the powers of the Governor, the powers of the President, the powers of the Secretary of Labor, to see what could be done. What is it humanly possible to do legally and constitutionally? I was not unaware of the fact that, whereas nothing untoward had happened at Akron when they did this, the crowd of people who were in the factories in the automobile industry were quite a different kind of people. In the first place, they were all very young. The average age of the automobile workers was along around twenty-seven, which means that they had an awful lot of very young people there at the peak of their physical powers, but having had no life experience, no softening, no humbling, no informing life experience, believing they could do everything.
So I was somewhat alarmed as to what might happen in these factories, because not only were they very young men, but they were not local people. They had come from
