had reached the age when that was usually done. He was left in control of policies, with this younger man whom Taylor approved of and could work with who was being moved right along.

When this trouble first began in steel, I telephoned to Mr. Stettinius and said that I very much wanted to see him, but I wanted to see him unofficially and privately. I wanted to go over some of these troubles in an entirely informal and human way and just canvass the situation. I asked if he would meet me at my club at half past ten on Monday morning. He did. He said certainly he would.

So he met me at the Cosmopolitan Club in New York at half past ten on a Monday morning. At this time the Cosmopolitan Club hadn't become accustomed to my occasional meetings with industrial and labor leaders. They later became accustomed to them and knew just what to do. But this was the first one, I think, that I had had, though I'm not sure. At any rate, Ed came. I have learned in later years, from a younger man who was in his office at the time, that Ed was terrified. He didn't know what he was being called on the carpet for. He knew me socially slightly, but this sounded very ominous to him. What did it mean? What was I going to put him through? He was quite nervous, said my informer. At
