him that Taylor was talking about that. As a matter of fact, this proposal of Chrysler's was really based on Taylor's proposal and he knew it. Chrysler was not an original thinker. He was a fixer. He'd fix it up. He'd throw dust in it.

So I hustled back to the Cosmopolitan Club to be there through the afternoon. You ask if I had ever suggested to Taylor that Sloan might call him. No, why should I? I was being honest about all this. There wasn't anything wrong about this. If it didn't come out well in the end, that was that. It was a good try. As a matter of fact, if you think twice, it was more to General Motors' advantage to keep it quiet than it was to mine. I was the person who might have leaked and made their lives unpleasant. I didn't. It was certainly my duty, as Secretary of Labor, to do everything it was possible to do to bring about a settlement and to make it possible for the workmen and their representatives to meet the employers against whom they had a grievance. That was my duty and the duty of the Conciliation Service of the Department of Labor.
