Judged, as all other people were, by his real personality and his real accomplishments.

That was our interview. He wanted very much to come and would, of course, hold himself at my disposal. He had mentioned to me his principal professors and what they knew about him, and if I wanted him to furnish any further references of people who knew him, and so forth and so on, he would be glad to. I thanked him and said I would think it over very seriously and would let him know if I wanted him to come over again.

I remember I stood up to say goodbye to him. He went out the door. He went by Miss Jay's desk. He stopped to speak to her, which, of course, is a way of doing things. He chatted a few moments with her. I heard her laugh and heard him laugh. Then he went out. She then came to the door of my great long office. She stood in the door looking at me. I could see her face plainly. She put her fingers on her lips and she shook her head - the “no” sign. That was an indication to me that he hadn't gone from the outer office. He was still in the office beyond hers. But she shook her head no. I beckoned her to come in. She went and looked to see if he had left the office. When he had, she came in.

I said, What's the matter with him, Miss Jay?
