man with thought. He had had the original idea for the Moore-McCormack group. They were getting sort of organized. I think McGrady asked them why they didn't form a union. They replied that them would like to, but they didn't have any charter from the International Longshoremen's Association. McGrady then tried to busy himself with the local International Longshoremen's group, which was small, to get them to issue a charter to these people. The organizing business began.

I cite this became it was the first appearance of Bridges. Things moved along fairly well and fairly rapidly in that the mon got better organized, and more organized. Bridges was always on the committee and therefore became a spokesman for more and more of them. But he was always this very humble, badly dressed, unaggressive personality.

I was trying to think what was the occasion of my having Bridges looked up. I suppose it was when I attempted to Set Joe Ryan to go out again and take charge of this, and really make a union out of these people that were milling around, because without a union there was no way of settling or agreeing to anything. Ryan replied, “Oh, they're no good, no good at all. You can't make
