I think it was that autumn that the AF of L met in San Francisco. That was the meeting at which they took John Lewis onto the Executive Committee of the AF of L, which is what he wanted. I went out to San Francisco to address the American Federation of Labor. I'm suite sure that it was that autumn. By the time this occurred they were in full negotiation. The strike wasn't settled but they were in negotiation. He believe they were operating the ships while the negotiations were going on. A large committes of the longshoremen, representing every dock, had been formed. This committee was dealing with the employers not directly, but through the mediation board.

I remember that I wont to call on Archbishop Hanna. That's when I found that he wasn't as alert, wasn't as acute in his recollections of what happened as he had been in earlier years. Of course, I saw Mr. Cushing and McGrady also. I remember the convention and certain things about it. For instance, I remember that McGrady took me to a hotel that I've never been able to locate since. It was apparontly all right. It was the head-quarters of the AF of L during the convention, I think. It was not the St. Francis. It was not the Palace. Perhaps it was the Clift. It was on a street that had
