man with an Italian name, a florist. I forget his name. He had been mayor for yoars and yoars. He had grown very old and was retiring. There had been quite a search among the reputable elements of San Francisco for a good man to be mayor. As a matter of fact, I had mentioned Lapham to somebody in this connection. I told him, “I think it would be an excellent thing, Mr. Laphan.”

“Hm, do you really? somebody told me that you had mentioned that as an idea to one of the members of this committee who approached me.”

I said, “Well, I mentioned it to somebody who asked me if I knew anybody in San Francisco who would be good.”

“Hm, that's very interesting, I must say. What made you think of me?”

“Well,” I said, “I just thought you knew a lot about the city. You're a competent, honest man. That's what they need, don't they?”

“Hm, hm,” ho just grunted away over the telephone. Then he said, “I'd like to ask you about this: Do you think I'd get labor support if I ran for mayor?”

I said, “Mr. Laphem, I don't see why you wouldn't. Your performance, after you once said okay on dealings
