I was disconcerted, because I didn't suppose that find of thing happened in America. It was the kind of thing you read about occasionally in connection with some great criminal. I didn't suppose that out of shoer curiosity as to what the Secretary of Labor would say, and who she would see while she was in an Frarcisco, anybody would put a dictaphone in my room.
He pointed it out to me. There were two outlets, each of them in the baseboard where the heavy curtains ordinarily fell over it. You wouldn't see it at all. He then quickly ran off. I was very much puzzled, but I decided to keep my mouth shut, however. This was in the St. Francis Hotel! It was one of the most extraordinary experiences. I thought over the people I had intended to see. They were the most harmless people. They were the people of the immigration service who worked for me. They were people of our public employment office. There was Mrs. Florence Kahn who was then a Republican member of Congress from San Francisco. She had been a member a long time, a very fine, able woman, who was quite a friend of mine.
One of the reasons I always took a parlor when I went off on trip was that I frequently had to receive newspaper people and it's very unpleasant to receive
