much taller than he had when I had seen him backstage at the AF of L convention. Of course, you say to yourself, “Ah, this is what success and prosperity does to anybody.”
I did learn, however, that his prosperity on the money side was none too good, because he had followed the same rule that Andy Furuseth had. He wouldn't take a salary any higher than the salary of the most expert, top classification longshoremen. That's what he took as a salary. I don't know what that amounted to, but at least it was better than a longshoreman who didn't have work every day in the week would have earned.
But he had success. He had standing. He talked over the telephone to reputable members of society, to members of his union, to members of other unions, to government officials, and to the waterfront employers, whenever he wanted to. He was in constant touch with Foisey and with other members of the waterfront employers' association. So he had come up in the world. He showed it in his general bearing and appearance.
I don't recall anything in particular that he said. He introduced the two people who were with him. My memory is that one of them was this fellow who later came to be called Blacky. He was the one who during the war was sent by Bridges out to Hawaii to do his organizing
